Noun Identification(Part-1)


Introduction
The noun has its base word in the Latin word nomen. It refers to name. Every language must have nouns. A noun is easily identified as a person, animal, place, thing and idea.
Identifying a Noun Method-I
A noun is a part of speech that denotes a person, animal, place, thing and idea.
Person   proper name, gender and title
Animal – proper name, species and gender (It include all the kinds of animal: birds, insects, etc.)
Place – proper name, physical location and general locale.
Thing   it includes now, will include, or included in the past.
Idea    be it a real, workable idea or an imaginary that might never come to realization.
Noun Examples
The nouns in each sentence have been bolded.
Person
·         The doctor checks the patient.
·         Dhoni didn’t play last match.
·         Einstein was a greatest scientist.
·         We must obey to our parents.
·         My mother looks a lot like my grandmother, and I look very much like them.
·         Sunder Pichchai is a CEO of Google.
Animal
·         The dog barked at last night.
·         Elephants never forget.
·         Rabbit eats carrot.
·         Cat and mouse are enemies.
·         Parrots can speak.
·         A bird flew in the sky.


Place  
·         The bank is open now.
·         Let’s go to the theatre.
·         Look over here.
·         I go to London.
·         Come here.
·         Moratuwa and peradeniya are two famous universities.

Thing
·         Catch the ball.
·         Please close the door and lock it.
·         Use words properly to be understood.
·         The lamp sits on a table next to the sofa.
·         Money doesn’t grow on trees.
·         I bought a pen.

Idea
·         Follow the rules.
·         A good friendship makes a man full.
·         The theory of relativity is an important concept.
·         Love is a wonderful emotion.
·         Prevention is better than cure.









Exercise-i
Find the nouns in the following sentences and put the nouns into the brackets and say its denotes category. First one is done for you.
Example:-  1 Nuwara-eliya  is a best natural place in Srilanka. (Nuwara-eliya, Srilanka/  place)
2.    Dr.Abdul kalam was a well-known scientist in the world.
3.    Friendship is an amazing relationship ever.
4.    Internet gives a lots of online job opportunity.
5.    A meaningful picture tells a thousands of words.
6.    Boiler chicken grows very fast.
7.    Newton’s third law defines every action has an opposite and same reaction.
8.    Kholi got the man of the match.
9.    Batticaloa is called the place for ‘singing fish’.
10.  Srilanka won the test match series against South Africa.
11.  Practice makes a man perfect.
