Proper Noun

Proper nouns have two distinct features:

   =>name specific one-of-a-kind items
   =>begin with capital letters, no matter where they occur within a sentence.

What are proper nouns?

  ü  Your own name and the names of your friends are proper nouns.
         Ex:- John, Martin, Ravi, Kumar, Sachin, Murali, Dhoni, Kohli …..etc

  ü  The names of countries and their people are also proper nouns.
   Ex:- Srilankan, American, Indian, Australian, Pakistani, Srilanka, India, Canada…etc

  ü  The names of towns, cities, buildings and landmarks are proper nouns.
  Ex:-  Tokyo, Sydney, Colombo, the Great Wall of China, Adam’s Peak, the Eiffel Tower,       Big  Ben, the Statue of Liberty…………etc


  ü  The days of the week and months of the year are proper nouns.
   Ex:- Sunday, Monday, January, December……….etc


  ü  The names of mountains, seas, rivers and lakes are proper nouns.
   Ex:- Mount Everest, Mount Pidurudalagala, Niagara Falls, Victoriya Falls, Dunkinda Falls, the Indian Ocean, the Asian Ocean, Batticaloa Lagoon………etc


  ü  The names of festivals, some special events and holidays are proper nouns.
   Ex:- Independence Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s day, Dewali, Milad-Un-Nabi Day,
Christmas, New Year’s Day, May Day, Valentine’s Day……………..etc

·         Taj Mahal was a statue of love.

·         Einstein was invented the theory of relativity.

·         The Great Wall of China is a one of the famous world wonder.

·         A lot of tourist visit the Adam’s Peak.

·         The meeting was postponed on the next Monday.

·         Mount Pidurudalagala is a largest mountain in Srilanka.

·         Srilanka has situated the center of the Indian Ocean.

·         The electrical and electronics goods prices reduce every Christmas season.

·         Tokyo is a capital of Japan.

·         Usain Bold is called world fastest men.

·         October 1 has reserved for Children’s Day.

·         Virat Kholi got the man of the match in the last match.

·         Sarkar movie was released on Dewali festival day.

·         Bangladesh defeated by India in the last Asia cup final.

·         Bandukapaya was a first king of Srilanka.

·         The government announces that all the schools should reopen in January.

·         Dunkinda Falls is a one of the most beautiful water fall in Srilanka.

Nouns are among the most important words in the English language without them, we’d have a difficult time speaking and writing about anything. Every type of noun comes with its own rules. we discuss the all types of nouns and exercises in the following pages.
(1) Common nouns
Common nouns are used to refer to general things rather than specific examples. Common nouns are not normally capitalized unless they are used as part of a proper name or are placed at the beginning of a sentence. Some common noun examples are included in the following sentences.
·         I want to follow my studies in open university. (here university denotes place)
·         He rent a book in library. (here library denotes place)
·         She bought medicine at the pharmacy. (here pharmacy denotes place)
·         They took her on the hospital. (here hospital denotes place)

9) Nouns are Appositive                                                                                           


Case 01

A noun or pronoun that renames another noun; An appositive is usually placed next to the noun it renames.

Examples: -
·         Kumar, an engineer, sketches the house plan.
(engineer renames the noun Kumar. Therefore, engineer is an appositive of Kumar.)

·         Dhoni, the caption, arranged the fielding.
(caption renames the noun Dhoni. Therefore, caption is an appositive of Dhoni.)

·         The insect, a cockroach, is crawling across the kitchen table.
(cockroach renames the noun insect. Therefore, cockroach is an appositive of insect)

·         Mr.Steepan, the principal, is having his fifth anniversary.
(principal renames the noun Mr.Steepan. Therefore, principal is an appositive of Mr.Steepan)

·         My mobile, SamsungJ7, has a finger print lock facility.
(SamsungJ7 renames the noun mobile. Therefore, SamsungJ7 is an appositive of mobile)


Case 02

When an appositive is not placed next to the noun it renames, the appositive is called a delayed appositive. 
Here underlined nouns are renamed with the bolded appositive (delayed appositives)

Example: -
· Shajith prepared a documents of the accident, as a well-known journalist.

·  Einstein was invented the theory of relativity, a famous scientist.

·  They seem pretty uncaring, her parents.

·  The hunter was trying to fight the bear, a real brute of a man.

· Kohli hit massive six in the last ball of the last over, the man of the match.

Note: the appositives are always separated with commas.
