Chapter 3: Types of nouns
Nouns are among the most important words in the English
language without them, we’d have a difficult time speaking and writing about
anything. Every type of noun comes with its own rules. we discuss the all types
of nouns and exercises in the following pages.
(1) Common nouns
Common nouns are used to refer to general things rather
than specific examples. Common nouns are not normally capitalized unless they are
used as part of a proper name or are placed at the beginning of a sentence.
Some common noun examples are included in the following sentences.

I want
to follow my studies in open university.
(here university denotes place)

He rent
a book in library. (here library denotes place)
·
She
bought medicine at the pharmacy. (here pharmacy denotes
place)
·
They took
her on the hospital. (here hospital denotes place)
·
All the
students should participate on the seminar. (here students
denote person)
·
The doctor
checks the patient. (here doctor and patient denote person)
·
The teacher
punished the student when he didn’t do the homework. (here teacher and
student denote person)
·
The baby cries a lot. (here baby denotes
person)
·
Would
you like a biscuit with
your tea?
(here biscuit and tea denote thing)
·
Please
close the door. (here door denotes thing)
·
He bought
a new car. (here car denotes thing)
·
He catches
the ball. (here ball denotes thing)
·
My parrot speaks what
I tell. (here parrot denotes animal)
·
She adopts
a cat. (here cat denotes animal)
·
Rabbits favorite food is carrot. (here Rabbit denotes
animal)
·
Studies are most important to live. (here studies denote
idea or thought)
·
Friendship is a best
relationship ever. (here friendship denotes idea or thought)
